I came across this hidden stone a couple of months ago. It is not in a particular beauty spot and it is well hidden. I have no idea who these four people are. Their names are certainly crying out for a story to be written about them. I have so many questions:
Why that particular Dartmoor place?
Why write the four names in two pairs?
Is it a memorial?
Does it mark a happy time?
Is the poetic nature of the names a coincidence?
Am I doing the wrong thing posting a picture of it on the internet?
I am usually very curious and want solid answers; but this time, there are so many stories in my head about Clem and Meg, Thomas and Athena that I would prefer not to find out the real one.
In case you didn’t Google because you didn’t want to find out I have done so with no result. Others may find something with more expert search techniques. It is strange and arises my curiosity also – similar to an abandoned wheelbarrow of stuff I snapped on my recent Macmillan Way walk (see slideshow), and like you, I replied to gimmer’s comment saying the fascination arises from pondering not knowing.
Years ago RR and I read a book called The Complete Practical Joker. A guy bought a monstrous multi levered Victorian dentist’s chair in an auction. He had it crated up and invented an address at the other side of the world and paid to have it shipped, then sat back and derived much pleasure at imagining all the huffing and puffing that would ensue as different people were faced with the problem of its logistics.
I love the dentist’s chair idea!
I wonder if the inscription was done in situ or taken to the site – how well wedged in was the stone?
