On my recent walk around the almost non existent Fernworthy Reservoir I ventured to the north of the water to an area that I have never visited before. I was very pleased that I did. As well as all of the stunning autumn colours, fallen leaves and rowan berries, I discovered a Rhos pasture. At the time I had no idea what a Rhos pasture was and admit to never having heard the name before. The information board filled in the gaps.
It’s a pasture system full of Purple Moor grass and rush located in a poorly drained area. Dartmoor has 20% of the country’s Rhos pasture. This particular one, as you can see from the notice board, is helping to save the Marsh Fritillary butterfly which is endangered. I think I will have to come back in the summer to see if I can spot any of the rare butterflies or the many interesting plants that can be found in this type of pasture. Even at this time of year there was still lots to see and appreciate though, and it was well worth the visit.
