In my (not so humble because I am right) opinion all good expeditions have their own expedition song. We had a particularly musical group of Silver Duke of Edinburgh youngsters with us this weekend who managed to sing their way through rain, mud, wet sleeping bags and pretty much anything that we Blondes asked them to cope with.
The song that emerged as a favourite was from the Disney film Frozen. Frozen is based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Snow Queen and inevitably includes a particularly catchy song about building snowmen. Have you finished listening? Now you will understand why the line, “Do you want to build a snowman?” has been echoing across Dartmoor. It has been sung from tent to tent, from tors and across rivers, even once at someone who thought that they had found a moment’s peace on the toilet (yes, we had one this time). The line lends itself to mutation and different lyrics have emerged; “Do you want to put your tent up?”, “Do you want to make the coffee?” and “Do you want to stop the rain now?” were favourites.
Imagine the excitement therefore when on day two of three, after lots and lots of rain but no snow at all, we walking past this strangely snowy looking field.
“Do you want to build a snowman?” suddenly seemed like exactly the right thing to be singing!
That’s a lovely new picture at the top of the page, full of flowers and amazing insects. Who wants fields covered in farm plastics?
Noticed vast swathes of this on the way up to Dartmoor today around Totnes. Very odd. Love the song from Frozen – will have to adopt it ourselves I think!
