I’ve been a bit obsessed with the weather recently. It’s easy to get obsessed; here’s how… book an expedition with students, notice on the forecast about a week before the expedition that there’s stormy weather about, check forecast frequently (and by ‘frequently’ I mean hourly sometimes!).
Weather patterns do change often and checking too far in advance makes you worry for nothing sometimes. But it also can give you a good overview of how the weather is changing.
While I’ve been weather watching I’ve learned some interesting things, that I thought I’d share with you.
If you stand with your back to the wind (in the northern hemisphere) low pressure will be on your left and high pressure on your right. Since high pressure has warmer air, it is a good thing if your route plan takes you to the right.
In March 2017 there was a new species of cloud named. The Volutus cloud species is described by the Met Office here and explains how the World Meteorological Organization has added it to its Cloud Atlas (who knew there was such a thing!). It’s a great looking tube shaped cloud I think you’ll agree and I can’t wait to see it for myself.
