Outlandishly Outsidish 6 – Grow Your Own Moor
Have a look at the photo below. Just a dustbin bag full of grass seed you might think, but you would be wrong. This is not just any old grass seed, this very special grass seed was given to me by Ranger Bill when we took our youngsters Dartmoor volunteering. It is unusual, I must admit, to give a lady grass seed instead of flowers but Ranger Bill had a purpose in mind. He wanted a volunteer to go back to Deeper Marsh a couple of weeks after our first reseeding efforts and sprinkle a bit more of the green stuff around.
There aren’t any particularly special Dartmoor plants in my bag of seed but nonetheless, I am curious to see what it looks like when it grows. I am imagining green and spiky but maybe it will be a bit more exciting and develop it’s own subterranean blanket bog or grow bluebells in the spring. There could even be the odd miniature sheep.
Anyway, there is only one way to find out what seed is going to do and that is to sow it. Which is exactly what I did.Very soon, I will have my very own little bit of Dartmoor to sniff when I can’t get up there. Please be reassured if you are Ranger Bill (or indeed Ranger Anyone), I am looking forward to sprinkling the rest of the seed in the place for which it was intended!
