I have never had an office before; I have shared many offices, along with their over-stuffed cardboard boxes, piles of mouldy cups and suspiciously smelling fridges. Now that I am working from home, things have changed a bit; thanks to the invention of the lap top, I have several offices:
OFFICE 1 – BED
If I am talking to you between the hours of six and eight in the morning, the chances are that I am doing it from Office 1. Advantages: Comfy, lack of household distractions. Disadvantages: Tempting to fall asleep.
Actual office
OFFICE 2 – ACTUAL OFFICE
Office 2 is my cosy sanctuary if the weather is chilly. Advantages: Specially designed areas for lists. Disadvantages: A bit dark on a sunny day. Tempting to fall asleep on the sofa bed.
OFFICE 3 – THE KITCHEN TABLE
I usually end up in Office 3 when I start working as I eat my breakfast (which is most days). Advantages: A lovely big table to spread out on. Plenty of daylight. Disadvantages: Tempting to eat. Lots of family action.
OFFICE 4 – THE GARDEN
Office 4 is my current office of choice. This may change when it starts to rain again. Advantages: I am definitely an outdoors girl and I love my plants. Disadvantages: I have to keep moving around to get into/out of the sun. Tempting to stop and tend garden/water greenhouse/do any garden jobs that I can invent.
OFFICE 5 – FOX TOR CAFE
Office 5 is the Two Blondes absolutely favourite office. Advantages: A position of power from which to watch the outdoor world go by. Coffee available when needed. Cheesy chips and a table big enough to spread a map on. Disadvantages: Tempting to forget working and just eat more cheesy chips!
We made use of “emergency office” the other day, it came in the form of a very comfy cave ish area atop one of the Staples on Dartmoor, great phone reception for a conference call and out of the wind, fab views tend to be a bit of a distraction though!
I established a great one in Scotland – it wasn’t much good in the rain though. Watch out for a blog post about it!
Loving the garden office, in its most literal sense!
We live and work on Dartmoor too – originally from the actual garden just like you (click here for my favourite photo of a Dartmoor web designer at work!).
Now we have a garden office, which is handy when we get invaded by pheasants. Do you have any anti-pheasant measures in Office 4?!
Ultimately, I think this HSBC advert says it all.
Sorry, the image of the Dartmoor web designer at work should have been this!
Now why didn’t I think of the cardboard box solution!? Genius!
