Do you think it’s possible to have an inbuilt trig pillar radar? Well, I didn’t think it was possible until I travelled approximately 5,000 miles across the world only to stumble across a trig pillar! This one was not sited by Ordnance Survey but was almost the same (apart from the beautiful Chinese writing).

The one that I found at the site of the Three Gorges Dam was also at the highest point around but was not used for mapping the landscape. This one was next to the Yangtze River in the Yiling District and was for measuring the height of the water and therefore the pressure of the water on the dam. The dam remains controversial for its impact on the surrounding area but is heralded within the country as a huge success.
