We all need to feel that we belong somewhere, are part of a group or a member of a community. I feel lucky that I am part of several of these, both expected and unexpected.

I have just returned from a trip to St James’s Palace to see my very fine young Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award participants receive their certificates from the Duke himself. The day was rewarding in so many ways. I feel privileged to have played a part in such fantastic people’s lives. They have given me so much happiness as I have watched them progress through their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. Although it marked the final date in their Gold group calendar, seeing them receive their Award in such style was perfect.

The day was perfect in so many ways but was topped off with a meal for all 4 of them, their families and me. Our ‘community’ had formed without us really knowing it and I will miss being part of it more than they realise. I will miss a particularly lovely younger sister and her childlike love for her big brother. I will miss seeing parents who are bursting with pride for their daughter. I will miss hearing about big sister’s antics and dad’s new job. I will miss hearing about 2 big sisters successes and love of Disney. I will miss the 4’s unending enthusiasm for life, their ability to brighten even the dullest of days and their inspirational hard work.
