At the beginning of January (the month of my 50th birthday) I set myself the challenge of sleeping outdoors (or very nearly outdoors) for 50 nights in 2018. I have now reached that milestone (the age, not the sleeps) and am pleased to say that I have already achieved four of my wild nights out.

January Camping Night 1
Type: Camper
Location: A friend’s drive in Newton Abbot
Date: January 1st (wake up)
Reason: New Year excitement
Supper: At home
Breakfast: Full English (cooked in friend’s kitchen)
Comment: First night in the camper, very warm and comfortable, some condensation issues.

January Camping Night 2
Type: Bothy (MBA)
Location: Mid Wales – Lluest Cwm Bach
Date: January 13th
Reason: Early birthday party
Breakfast: Boiled egg and Frazzle baps
Comment: Not quite the quiet party of three ladies I imagined, we were joined by five other walkers and six mountain bikers. Excellent night all round.

January Camping Night 3
Type: Tent, wild camp
Location: Dartmoor
Date: January 19th
Reason: DofE Gold training
Supper: Take away (shh don’t tell anyone)
Breakfast: Four shortcake fingers, a squashed banana and a cup of peppermint tea
Comment: Got in a bit of a muddle trying to put a second jacket on inside my sleeping bag at around 1 am. Slept well after a natter with B1 but up at 5:30 to pack up and get walking.

January Camping Night 4 (and 5)
Type: YHA Camping Pod
Location: New Forest
Date: January 29th
Reason: 50th birthday
Supper: Fray Bentos pie and tinned potatoes
Breakfast: YHA Continental
Comment: These two spanned my 50th birthday and were included because their lack of loo. Extremely cosy, very dark and a comfortable futon. Maybe not so wild but definitely different, would recommend this one!
