A perfect autumn day, I am sure you will agree, has an air of mildness about it. The air is gentle, the sun warm enough to sit out in, but not too hot, and you can smell the leaves turning brown.

We have had some of those days down Devon way … and now they have finished.  Now we have greyness, wind and rain; proper Dartmoor weather.  Weather that hits you in the face, leaves you damp to the skin but really tells you that you are alive. I wonder how many mornings there have been when the Two Blondes have woken up on an expedition morning, looked out of the window/tent at just this sort of weather and thought, “Why on earth am I doing this?”

Just like everything else this morning, I suspect that the answer to that question is “Blowing in the wind.”
