This summer the Two Blondes ran three ‘Navigation for Beginners’ workshops and we thoroughly enjoyed all of them. We met some lovely, enthusiastic people who quickly picked up the basics of navigation, and were keen to go off and have a go on their own. We have had some great feedback, which is always nice.
The prize though, for hardiness has to go to the the three brave souls who turned up for our final workshop. The weather was foul and we did have some cancellations! Not only were these guys hardy, but they were really good company and maintained a sense of humour in the face of adversity. We weren’t out doing practical navigation for as long as we were for our other workshops, but we did have a good time when we got back to base, writing route cards for the next day (I told you they were hardy!) and emptying water out of our pockets (I could have kept a goldfish in mine!)
We Blondes are in the process of organising some follow up activities; proposals include a day’s consolidation walk, a night navigation exercise and maybe even a wild camp. Keep your eyes peeled for more news of these.
Special thanks are due to Dartmoor National Park Authority and Ordnance Survey for their support with all of our workshops.
Get Outside this autumn guys, but do it safely, with a map, a compass and a bit of knowledge! It’ll be fun, we promise!
I am the navigator for our team on the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Lych Way Walk tomorrow, I think I’ve retained everything you taught me!
Lucy that’s fabulous, good luck with it and if you get stuck ask one of the guys in red for a pointer or two – they all really know their navigation stuff! Do let us know how you get on – maybe a picture 🙂
Ah, we had a fabulous day, although no navigation as in bearings was required, just some thumbing of the map once we dropped off the moor onto paths. Great day and wonderful weather too, and now I’m wondering whether to walk it out and back next year!
Well done, Dartmoor at her finest. So now you need to go and practice some bearings 🙂
Think you Blondes are in my neck of the woods tomorrow – if so, have fun! I have a date with an organ – – –
We are, and are very much looking forward to it. Enjoy your Sunday! x
