Now we Blondes can’t claim to have invented this game (thanks to Si) but, if you know Dartmoor, it is really good fun. If you don’t know Dartmoor, I will be really impressed if you manage to play it at all, but feel free to admire the pictures.
Here are the rules:
1. Put your Dartmoor map away.
2. Look at the three pictures below.
3. Study the contour lines.
4. Decide where you think the centre of each picture is.
5. Use our comments link to tell us your answers.
Struggling? Here are some Blonde hints:
1. Look for the obvious valleys.
2. Study the shape and slope of the hills.
3. Close contours = steep slope.
4. Cheat and use your OL28!
At least you know which way up the contours are – don’t you??? – or have you been very trixy indeed and inverted them ? Observers in the 1st WW used to try this to work out exactly what was on captured maps. It took ages and ws very difficult. I’ve given up – don’t know Dartmoor well enough – so I’m off to dig out a MAP.
I have to confess to checking my answers with a map when I first tried the game. It is compulsive though, if you like maps at all!
At school we would have traced, drawn on to thick card and cut out all the contours and piled them on top of each other (properly placed of course) but the examples were much simpler at school. As it it, I am wondering if colouring in each contour line would give a clearer picture. Love, B2GM
Never mind the rules, you have created a beautiful modern art triptych. Just hang it on the wall, keep stum, forget your little competition and accept the positive art critiques.
They are lovely aren’t they, if only I had been clever enough to create them!
Ummmmm………………mmmm, tricky!!! Determined to figure it out, but in the mean time I can see lots of funny faces!!!!
You will definitely get it if you get your map out. I know that you have been to at least one of them!
The centre of no.3 is Okement Hill, with High Willhays top left and Steeperton Tor towards the top right. Still working on the others….
Hmm, I won’t comment yet so that other people have a chance but good effort so far 🙂
Cracking game this; it could keep me quiet for hours. But if I don’t stop staring at it now I’ll be here all night. And I’ll drive myself mad.
Still no idea about no.1, but is that Venford Reservoir centre right on no.2?
Not Venford but you are getting there 🙂
Fernworthy rather than Venford for no.2 then?
And is that Huntingdon Warren just right of centre in no.1, with the Avon valley disappearing off the bottom right hand corner?
You are loving the game aren’t you! Yes on both counts and jolly well done. Would you like some more?
Yes please!
