By: Blonde Two
Today Blonde Two is nervous. I am meeting Blonde One for lunch – this is fine, nothing to be scared of there, she doesn’t usually turn into a knife wielding maniac at meal times. After that we are going out on a new route that she has planned – this is also fine, we do a lot of route planning, Blonde One is very good at it and I trust her not to sneak any stepping stones in (my nemesis).
No, the thing that is making my stomach churn a bit (does anyone else get that before a walk?) is the plan to stay out after dark and do some night navigation practice. I know that I need to do it – I have a reassessment for my Walking Group Leader award soon. I know that I can do it. So why the nerves?
I don’t have a specific answer but I get Dartmoor nerves quite often and have come to the conclusion that the anxiety comes from a healthy respect for the situation in which you are placing yourself. Dartmoor can be a dangerous place and should be respected. People get lost and have accidents (ask Dartmoor Rescue if you don’t believe me). We Blondes make sure that we always go out with all of the correct equipment so maybe the nerves are just another way of preparing.
Or maybe I am just a big chicken … either way, I will let you know how we get on tomorrow.
