On our recent trip to the Isles of Scilly to visit Little Miss Blonde and Numbers, Mr Blonde One and I decided that we would hire a little motor boat on their day off and explore some of the islands and waterways ourselves. After all the years we’ve been coming to these islands we’ve never done this and I think it’s fair to say I was a little bit nervous. Mr Blonde One has driven boats before and Numbers is quite experienced in the water so I didn’t have anything to worry about.
My nerves soon disappeared when we were handed our emergency kit: buoyancy vests and coastal flare pack. I couldn’t wait to see what would be in a boat’s emergency kit! Would there be the things I’m used to: first aid, survival bag, whistle, map and compass?
I was not disappointed to find a first aid kit, map and compass. Although in true laid back Scilly style they had all seen slightly better days. There was also a very useful tide times chart; it’s easy to get caught out with the very low tides on Scilly. Most exciting, however, was the 2 emergency flares. I was itching to play with them but Numbers insisted I put them down! I am now wondering if they might be a useful addition to my rucksack?!
