Blonde One and I have talked about ‘jobbies’ for a fair few years now. If you don’t know what I am talking about (or possibly think I am being rather rude) allow me to explain. A jobby is any activity which takes up as much time as a hobby but doesn’t pay the mortgage. The great thing about jobbies however (and because we were so busy with ours, it took us years to work this out) is that they can, with enough hard work, grow into actual jobs. I have been making my living writing for other people for nearly two years now and Fi Darby Freelance is going from strength. As well as writing regular blog posts for clients and adding content to their websites I get paid to write children’s stories and magazine articles.
I would love to get into a bit of travel writing (as well as the travel blog posts I write here) but it is a difficult market to break into. Imagine my delight when, last week, I was contacted by a magazine who had read one of my Two Blondes Walking blog posts and asked to write for them. I did actual dancing, I can tell you and have started writing already.
So, if you are currently working hard at something you love and feeling like you are banging your head against a brick wall, take heart. With a little bit of imagination and a whole load of hard work, great things can happen.
