I think we would all agree that nature is beautiful. Even slippery slimy mud can hold a certain beauty never mind the glorious flowers, trees and rivers that we are surrounded by. It’s easy to assume that anything man-made is much less beautiful than anything natural. This is not always the case, however. There are numerous examples in our countryside of where man has used the land and inadvertently created something simply stunning. The south west is well known for being rich in china clay from as far back as the 1700’s. Some of the mines now are unused but there is evidence across Devon and Cornwall of the presence of mining in various shapes and forms.
The south west of Dartmoor near to Shaugh Prior has lots of mining sites. One of these areas is now home to some stunning lakes that are now looked after by Plymouth and District Angling Club. They are a stunning additional to the landscape as nature has partly reclaimed what was once a deep pit devoid of any china clay.
