Anything goes on a Monday so, as you all head back to work, here’s something a little bit Blonde and a little bit outdoors to get you thinking.

This is the amazing sculpture that will greet you as you enter the Theatre Royal in Plymouth. It is 7 meters of amazingness!

Joseph Hillier created ‘Messenger’ after seeing the rehearsal of Shakespeare’s play Othello in 2014. The actor, Nicola Kavanagh, who inspired the sculpture said of it: “She’s brave, she’s not afraid. She is ready for anything that comes her way. If one little girl in Plymouth or anywhere else sees her and is inspired that would be great. There aren’t that many statues of women and those that are around are passive, demure or looking beautiful. She looks like she’s engaging and acting in a rebellious manner. I have two nieces, I think it’s very important that little girls and little boys see women doing things – and you can’t miss Messenger.”

As with all pieces of art, this has encountered some criticism, but for me this is a sculpture which signals the shift in perception of women away from the traditional to the courageous and adventurous. Brilliant!
