When Blonde One and I took some of our lovely Young Leaders’ equally lovely mums on our recent Bronze DofE Diamond Challenge expedition, one mum made us all warning labels to wear on our rucksacks. I think these were in case we got lost (I fully accept responsibility for the one time we did go the wrong way); or maybe they were a genuine warning to the male of the species, that we were not to be messed with.
Whichever way, I overheard some Sunday-Lunch-Munchers in the pub talking about us.
“What are those labels?”
“Do you think they are doing that thing you do before you get married?”
“No, they’re too old!”
I didn’t tell the other members of my fab team, I thought it might have spoiled their lunch!
What an odd world we live in! In my youth, no-one would have expected Mums to be unmarried. Now, prospective husbands and wives ask
their children to be their bridesmaids and pageboys.
