Rippon Tor is a firm favourite with the Two Blondes for many reasons and I feel like I’ve visited there perhaps more times than a lot of others. Despite this it was only recently that I discovered the two mill stones that lie within a metre or two of the trip pillar at the top. Once I found them I researched what exactly they were used for. The obvious place to start any research that is Dartmoor related is Legendary Dartmoor. Apparently tin ore was crushed between two of these stones in preparation for smelting. This process was used as far back as the 1500s and produced a fine grade of ore due to the rough nature of the granite stones. We always knew that Dartmoor produce is top quality!

My photos don’t really do the stones justice so I’m afraid you will just have to go and visit yourself!
