There are many reasons why I had a lovely time this week in the Brecon Beacons apart from the company and the fact that I was not at work! Here are just a few:
I saw more snow in 2 days than I have seen in 2 years in Devon! Although trudging through snow is much harder than bog hopping on Dartmoor.
The views are wider reaching than most in Devon. The highest point in Devon is on High Willhayes and stands at 621m. The highest point in the Beacons is Pen y Fan at 886m.
The sense of satisfaction when reaching the top of a hill in the Beacons is far greater. The hills are much steeper and more frequent than on Dartmoor. Even the most strenuous stretches of the South West Coastal Path do not quite measure up to the Beacons standard.
The place names are more fun: Sugar Loaf and Table Mountain to name just 2. Although the correct pronunciation of High Willhayes does generate a giggle usually and Devon does have some unusual place names.
All in all, my trip was a great success and I look forward to returning soon – maybe the Two Blondes together this time?
However, I am a Devonian and Dartmoorian at heart and I will always return hastily to my own stomping ground!
