A very clever (and maybe slightly annoying) person is going to tell me that the creatures in my picture are not horses and are not wild. They would be right of course; but ‘Farmed Ponies’ doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.
I usually observe Dartmoor ponies leading a very sedate life; they are often engaged in such mundane activities as grazing, stopping the traffic and nibbling Blonde rucksacks.
After the eclipse on Friday, Not-at-all-Blonde and I noticed this pair getting a bit excitable. They did neighing, galloping and generally horsing (sorry!) around. We were thrilled when I managed to get close enough (for once the gorse was useful) to take this picture.
Brilliant photo.
Here is the best I could do on my trek across your wonderful Dartmoor:

yes – beats cats and puppies pics any day
I hope that one didn’t make you jump. Scariest thing is when you are in your tent at night and they go harrumphing past! It always sounds like there are at least a thousand of them!
Hee – scariest thing I ever heard outside my tent was a deep snoring, snorting sound at about 2 a.m. and the dog went nuts. I lay in the dark wondering what on earth to do and eventually and very timidly opened up the bottom of the door and peeped out into the night. There were two hedgehogs facing up to one another and completely oblivious to K9’s presence only a foot or so away. Phew!!! Not a ghostie nor a ghoulie after all.
What a gorgeous piccie! Green with envy. I wonder if the outcome will be some more tiny hooves on Dartmoor?
I will be on the look-out for a little cheeky brown/black/white foal in that area!
Well, they look a bit wild to me (but then I find horses a bit scary and so does my dog) wild? they were furious….
I was quite glad of the gorse bush to hide behind. Mind you, I think the brown one had the joys of spring on his mind!
Hello there!
I’m currently a flat mate with Not-At-All-Blonde at University and am doing some research on Dartmoor and its wildlife. Being a local to Devon myself (Brixham) Not-At-All-Blonde directed me to your fantastic blog.
I stumbled across this post, and was wondering if I could use this picture (of the two horses playing) within my work. I will of course reference you and the blog!
Thanks in advance and keep up the awesome writing!
Thanks 🙂
Hi Conor – You are very welcome to use the photo and any of our other ones. Feel free to email us if you have any questions about wildlife on Dartmoor. Keep an eye on Not-At-All-Blonde for us, we miss (but don’t tell her that!) B2
